Carroway Lane is about a neighborhood full of people who cross paths, causing a chain reaction of bad, good, violent, complicated, tragic, and somewhat disturbing things to happen. This is told primarily from the point of view of Jonathan, the boy who triggers the chain of events to occur in the neighborhood of Auburn Heights, Georgia (fictional as far as I know), but all of the characters receive the development they deserve.
These are the main characters but there are over ONE HUNDRED others, including their friends, families, coworkers, and other people living in Auburn Heights. It's told from the points of view of the characters I am about to describe, along with around a dozen others. The setting is based on where I lived in Hall County, Georgia, but none of the characters are based ENTIRELY on anyone I know, though I do write things based on my own experiences and the things that have happened to people I've encountered while living in Georgia for five years.
The Major Characters:
Jonathan-16, closeted gay guy, shy, moved to Georgia with his mother and grandmother, smokes cigarettes, Agnostic, ending his sophomore year of high school, easily persuaded to engage in dangerous behavior and self destructive habits.
Elaine-33, divorced and widowed (in that order), works for a plumbing company as a dispatcher, trying to keep her 'past life' hidden from her son.
Sarah-25, lives across the street from Jonathan with her girlfriend of two years, reckless, works at Subway, keeps many secrets from her girlfriend including her smoking habit, wants to make new friends but is worried that her girlfriend won't approve, wants to distance herself from her family as much as possible
Mallory-24, Sarah's girlfriend, borderline alcoholic, works at an animal hospital, overly protective and afraid of losing Sarah, feels the need to save everyone, avoids forming attatchments to most men because most of the men she's ever let herself get close to emotionally have harmed her.
Rob-24, lived next to Sarah and Mallory, overly concerned about his weight and appearance, works at a sex shop, trying to find a roomate, girlfriend, and a group of friends who won't use him for something. He wants to find a publisher for a book of poems he's written, plays guitar, is very self conscious and sees himself as a failure with unachievable goals.
Brett-14, 8th grader, lives with his timid mother and abusive father, lives next to Jonathan's family, has an obsession with slasher flicks and Marvel comics, forms a complicated friendship with Jonathan.
Keith-19, lives with his mother, small time drug dealer, tendency to rush through relatonships, is close friends with Jared, main goals are to get a car and move out of Georgia.
Jared-18, high school dropout, lives with his religious grandmother and unemployed father, often finds himself in relationships with his father's exes, spends most of his time alone at the neighborhood playground.
Martha-67, lives with her dog Percy, has had very little contact with others since the death of her husband Franklin in 1997, lonely, welcomes new people to the neighborhood but is often pushed away, ignored, and seen as a 'crazy woman', generous, protective and caring, especially to the younger characters. She stopped believing in God after Franklin's death.
Carmen-15, moved from a dangerous neighborhood with her mother, 2 brothers, aunt and 2 year old cousin, taunted by many of her peers because she enjoys reading and learning more than the company of others, lives next to Rob, is in the 8th grade, wants to be a mother, becomes friends with Sarah after meeting her at Subway.
Joanna-42, Keith's dealer, trying to provide for her 2 sons and 4 year old daughter, worried that her children will find out about what she does, a complicated and violent chain of events earn her many enemies and a lot of power.
Shawn-19, Joanna's oldest son, friends with Keith and Jared, develops feelings for Carmen upon her arrival to the neighborhood
