Come up with a new cast for one of your favorite horror films. The film can be set whenever and wherever you like. You could take a movie from 2011 and cast actors from 1941. You could also take a French film and cast it with South Korean actors.

I was going to challenge myself and try to recast John Carpenter's The Thing, but, man, oh, man, that is just not a challenge I want to try and master. So . . . Another movie Carpenter directed then!

Well, I wouldn't go as far as calling it a favorite horror film of mine, but having just watched the '94 version of The Stand by Mick Garris after just finishing with Stephen King's book of the same name not too long beforehand, I think I could come up with a better cast and director from that time period. Maybe
Mother Abagail, as played by Ruby Dee, is just about the only person I wouldn't recast. But if I had to, gun to my head, Maya Angelou would be a substantial replacement, I'd say.
Stuart Redman - Keith David Frannie Goldsmith - Patricia Arquette Harold Lauder - Wil Wheaton Nick Andros - Kiefer Sutherland Tom Cullen - Tim Curry Larry Underwood - Johnny Depp Nadine Cross - Rosanna Arquette "Joe"/Leo - Brad Renfro Glen Bateman - Roscoe Lee Browne Ralph Brentner - Jack Nance Susan Stern - Lili Taylor Dayna Jurgens - Elizabeth Peña Lucy Swann - Heather Langenkamp Judge Farris - Hal Holbrook Randall Flagg - Michael Parks Lloyd Henreid - Everett McGill "The Trashcan Man" - Michael Berryman Julie Lawry - Parker Posey
"The Kid" wasn't even in the '94 adaptation, which I can understand. Especially having to cooperate with ABC's standards. If that weren't an issue, and HBO had aired this instead, then maybe "The Kid" could have been played by Harry Dean Stanton, despite the big age gap. An ironic name instead.
I'm trying not to say David Lynch for who should have directed The Stand back in the early-mid '90s, but I've just been on a Lynch kick lately so that's really hard to do. Still, director-wise, The Stand should've been directed by John Carpenter. The Thing has a phenomenal ensemble, and Christine is highly underrated. Not to mention, In the Mouth of Madness is a great end-of-the-world movie from the '90s. Had he been given the opportunity, the right budget, and a premium channel to work with I think The Stand from the '90s would have been so much better.
