Wes Craven re-invented and revitalised the slasher-horror genre with this modern horror classic, which manages to be funny, clever and scary, as a fright-masked knife maniac stalks high-school students in middle-class suburbia. Craven is happy to provide both tension and self-parody as the body count mounts - but the victims aren't always the ones you'd expect.

Still to this day my favorite of the four Scream movie entries! The film is filled with quotes to keep it remembered for decades after it's release. The Ghostface killer reveal of Billy and Stu as the psychotic duo is my preferred pairing of lunatics with Stu making the quip "My mom and dad are going to be so mad at me!" Shaggy REALLY went off the deep end after losing Scooby-Doo...

Either killer would've been totally predictable on their own (they were arguably the two most suspicious of the lot). The real surprise came from having the two working together. I doubt most people were expecting a film with a rather small cast (and small bodycount) to have TWO killers.
Scream 2 also surprised me with that. I kind of figured they wouldn't do that again, instead going for an individual killer. Scream 3 was surprising because I was so used to having two killers that I figured they'd go that route again. With Scream 4 I didn't know what to expect but by the time Rebecca was killed off, I figured there HAD to be multiple killers.

I know that the second and third films were both heavily rewritten. Apparently, if the leaked script is anything to go by, the second movie was originally supposed to have four killers, with Mrs. Loomis and Cotton leading the show and Hallie and Derek as accomplices. It would explain why Hallie seemed so flat otherwise, if a major part of her character was cut from the movie. As for the third, even discounting how Kevin Williamson's original script was abandoned after Columbine, it apparently also originally had two killers, with Angelina as Roman's accomplice.

I knew Scream 3 originally had Angelina as Roman's accomplice (which still would've been really cool) but I'd forgotten about Scream 2 originally having FOUR killers. I thought it had three originally, but it's also been a really long time (at least 10 years) since I read the original script. Four killers would've been far too many. I remember just about EVERYONE dying in the original Scream 2 script though.

Why was the Kevin Williamson script for 3 discarded due to Columbine? Did it include something like a school shooting sequence?

I don't believe so. I think the studio just got cold feet because of the school shootings. Especially after Columbine. And the fact that the killers in Willamson's script were going to be fans, presumably students, of the Stab movies. The studio also didn't really want Wes Craven to play up the horror aspect nor show blood, but . . .
As far as the first movie in the series goes, it is certainly the best. Definitely an important addition to horror movies everywhere. Although, I wish this movie didn't overshadow Wes Craven's New Nightmare so much as it were.
