I wasn't much of a fan when I first caught this years ago, and I'm still not a fan having rewatched it just today.
I mean, the premise and situation is just downright terrifying. Absolutely scary. The presentation however, outside of the actual murder/rape scenes, is less than impactful.
There should have never been any bumbling cops, and I love Craven's original idea for the father to use a scalpel to kill Krug instead of the chainsaw the producers insisted on using in the end. When it comes to pre-Nightmare on Elm Street films from Wes Craven, I prefer The Hills Have Eyes. When it comes to this and Ingmar Bergman's The Virgin Spring, the source of inspiration for The Last House on the Left, I prefer Bergman's film.

The movie does have one of the best horror trailers though:
And as for the music used in the movie, this is the only tune I actually cared for. All the rest could have been dumped, if you ask me.

I don't know how I feel about the acting either. Not really good performances, save for maybe the two teenage girls.
